Tennis: Rebeka Masarova Upsets Laura Siegemund in WTA Event

Masarova Continues Impressive Run, Advances to Second Round

Rebeka Masarova caused an upset in the first round of the WTA event in Budapest on Monday, defeating Laura Siegemund, a top-50 player, in straight sets. The 23-year-old Masarova, ranked 142nd in the world, won 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour.

Masarova, a Slovakian rising star, has been in impressive form this season. She reached the semifinals of a WTA event in Auckland earlier this year and has won three ITF tournaments.

Siegemund Falls Short in Budapest

Siegemund, a German veteran, was playing in her first tournament since the Australian Open. The 34-year-old, who has been ranked as high as 27th in the world, struggled to find her rhythm against Masarova.

Siegemund was broken three times in the first set and never recovered. Masarova continued to dominate in the second set, breaking Siegemund twice more to seal the victory.

What's Next for Masarova and Siegemund?

Masarova will face either Anna Bondar of Hungary or Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine in the second round. Siegemund will have the chance to bounce back at the WTA event in Prague next week.

Additional Notes

  • Masarova's victory is her first top-50 win of her career.
  • Siegemund has now lost her last three matches.
  • The WTA event in Budapest is a WTA 250 event, the lowest level of WTA tournaments.
